Specifications: Part 1 - General
1.01 Related Documents
Weather Barrier Detail Drawings, site specific drawings and General Provisions including Supplementary and Special Conditions applying to the work addressed in this section.
1.02 Description of Work
Extent of Weather Barrier Roofing System work is indicated on the drawings and is further defined by provisions of this section that includes roofing, flashing and reinforcing of joints and junctions, and roof accessories integrally related to roof installation. Areas to be re-roofed include positive slope existing roofs as indicated on drawings. Final determination of the fitness of the Weather Barrier System, or its components, for any given roof may be made by a member of Weather Barrier Technical Department or company authorized personnel.
1.03 Quality Assurance
- Manufacturer Qualifications: Provide primary products, including Weather Barrier Roofing Membrane, Weather Barrier Flashing Grade, etc., by a single manufacturer (Weather Barrier), which has produced this type of product successfully for not less than ten (10) years. Provide secondary products only as approved by Weather Barrier for use with the specified Weather Barrier Roofing System.
- Applicator Qualifications: A single qualified applicator shall perform all work addressed in this section, and shall be qualified by Weather Barrier for application of the Weather Barrier Roofing System.
1.04 Pre-Application Roofing Inspection
Prior to scheduled commencement of Weather Barrier Roofing System and associated work, conduct a meeting at the project site with Applicator, Owner, Weather Barrier representative and any other persons directly concerned with the performance of the work. The main purpose of this meeting is to review recommended methods and procedures related to roofing work, including but not necessarily limited to the following:
- Tour representative areas of roofing substrates to inspect and discuss conditions of substrate, penetrations and other preparatory work to be performed.
- Review Weather Barrier Roofing System requirements, Weather Barrier Detail Drawings, specifications and other documents, if applicable.
- Review required inspection(s), testing and material usage accounting procedures.
1.05 Submittals
As required, submit Weather Barriers technical product data, installation instructions and recommendations for each type of required roofing product. Include data substantiating that materials comply with requirements.
1.06 Job Conditions
- Roof Work: Proceed with roofing work only when existing and forecasted weather conditions will permit work to be performed in accordance with Weather Barrier recommendations and warranty requirements as follows:
- Do not begin work if rain is expected within twenty-four hours of application, or if temperatures are expected to fall below 50°F or 10°C during the duration of the job. (NOTE: 60° F LIQUID EPDM)
- High end temperature restriction (both air and substrate) for application of Weather Barrier products is 120°F. If substrate temperatures exceed 120°F, recommend that Weather Barrier products be applied during cooler periods of the day. If this is not practical, the substrate can be cooled with water, and then Weather Barrier products applied just after the water has flashed-off. No moisture can be present when applying Weather Barrier products. Weather Barrier products applied to substrates at elevated temperatures (above 120°F) may experience blistering. (NOTE: Darker colored substrates have higher surface temperatures)
- Take into consideration curing properties of Weather Barrier Roofing Systems; allow for sufficient daylight hours necessary for sufficient curing of materials.
- Other weather and environmental conditions to consider are mist, dew, condensation and relative humidity. These factors can affect Weather Barrier drying times and, under extreme conditions, can result in product inconsistencies or possible wash-off.
- Questionable Substrates: If any questions arise regarding the compatibility of Weather Barrier products with an existing substrate, Installer shall prepare test patches to check adhesion. Always contact Weather Barriers Technical Department concerning questionable substrates, required additional information and recommended test patch materials.
1.07 Product Handling
Store and handle Weather Barrier materials in a manner that shall ensure there is no possibility of contamination. Store in a dry, well ventilated, weather-tight place at temperatures between 50°F and 80°F until product is ready to be applied (keep from freezing). Do not stack material pallets more than two high. Do not subject existing roof to unnecessary loading of stockpiled materials. Please note that all Weather Barrier water-based products are packaged in plastic containers, with the exception of one-gallon containers.
1.08 Warranties
Provide Weather Barrier System Warranty per the requirement of the Building owner and/or Project Architect. In order to achieve any Weather Barrier System Warranty, the following conditions apply:
- Determination and appropriateness of the Weather Barrier Roofing System for any given roof must be obtained from Weather Barriers Technical Department prior to offering any warranted Weather Barrier System. Weather Barrier will refuse to offer a warranty on any Weather Barrier System being installed over an unfit, unsound or inappropriate substrate.
- Installer must be a qualified Weather Barrier Applicator. System Warranty work cannot be subcontracted to a non-qualified applicator.
- Weather Barrier Roofing System must be applied to full area of the roof. A system warranty will not be issued for Weather Barrier System installations over a section of any roof unless otherwise approved by Weather Barrier.
- Applicator shall provide Weather Barrier at least two (2) weeks notice for scheduling of both interim and final inspections.
- Gutters and roof areas which pond water for more than 48 hours are not included under Weather Barrier System Warranties.
- Completed Warranty Registration must be returned to Weather Barrier with appropriate Applicator and Owner signatures no later than 30 days after issuance by Weather Barrier.
1.09 Treatment of Seams, Flashing, Fasteners
- Encapsulate all fasteners with Weather Barrier 1750 Mastic (approximately 800 fasteners per gallon).
- Flash all horizontal seams with Weather Barrier 1750 Mastic, then embed 4" or 6" Weather Barrier 201 polyester fabric, and cover the mesh with Weather Barrier 1750 Mastic (approximately 75 linear feet per gallon).
- Flash all vertical seams with Weather Barrier 1750 Mastic (approximately 180 linear feet per gallon).
Alternate to section C: to improve performance, flash all vertical seams with Weather Barrier 1750 Mastic, then embed 3' Weather Barrier 201 polyester fabric, and cover the mesh with Weather Barrier 1750 Mastic (approximately 125 linear feet per gallon).
- Flash all curbs, vent pipes, pinholes on metal panels and skylights with Weather Barrier 1750 Mastic, then embed Weather Barrier 201 polyester fabric and cover the mesh with Weather Barrier 1750 Mastic (approximately 75 linear feet per gallon).
Alternate: Coat the fiberglass skylights, if they are not utilized, with Weather Barrier 2000, 1650 or 1655 Coating (use a different color to distinguish the roof from the skylight for safety reasons).
- Coat all areas that pond water with a Weather Barrier Liquid EPDM / Weather Barrier WB201 / Weather Barrier Liquid EPDM system(approximately 50 square feet per gallon).
